On Oct. 5, 2011, at approximately 4:00 a.m., Shareef Allman, a heavy equipment operator at Lehigh Hanson’s Permanente Cement Plant in Cupertino, arrived at work for a safety meeting. According to other employees also in attendance, Allman pulled a gun from his waistband and began to fire upon his coworkers. In an attempt to explain Allman’s actions, described as out of character and unexpected by his colleagues and family, survivors also indicated that Allman was under pressure at work due to accusations of reckless machine operation. In a statement made to the San Jose Mercury news, one survivor speculated that Allman felt his coworkers were trying to “get him fired.” Allman fled the scene of the initial shooting in a 1999 Mercury Hatchback, but at approximately 7:00 a.m., another shooting was reported in a neighborhood near Cupertino’s Hewlett-Packard campus.
